Fare collection projects are among the most complex, most public, and most expensive undertakings a transit agency will take on. When they go well, riders barely notice. When they go badly, everyone notices – and the agency lives with the consequences for many years.
Ian Newberg founded Newberg Mobility Advisors to help agencies land in the first category.
Over more than 30 years in transportation, he has worked across every side of the fare collection landscape – with transit agencies, with technology providers, and on major transportation programs throughout North America. That range matters. He has sat on both sides of the procurement table, which means he knows how vendor proposals are written, where the risk actually hides in a contract, and which decisions made early quietly determine whether a program succeeds three years later.
His work spans the full lifecycle of a project: early strategy and requirements development, RFP development and procurement strategy, vendor evaluation and contract support, and implementation and deployment oversight. Areas of focus include account-based ticketing, open-loop and contactless payments, mobile ticketing, and the replacement of aging legacy systems.
Newberg Mobility Advisors is deliberately independent. The firm sells no hardware, no software, and no platform – which means the advice you receive is shaped by your agency’s needs, not by a product roadmap.
